Organised by passionate volunteers, OpenSouthCode is an annual regional event in Málaga where software developers and architects come together to network and discuss the latest trends in the world of open-source software and hardware.
Unlike many of the bigger tech conferences in the area, this two-day event is free for all and has a decidedly down-to-earth vibe, making it a great place to connect with the local community. With over 700 in attendance, this year’s event took place 9 - 10 June in the beautiful and historic La Térmica building. Check out this quick recap for a glimpse of the action:
As champions of all things open-source, we were proud to be Platinum sponsors of OpenSouthCode 2023. Members of our Talent Acquisition and Engineering teams were onsite supporting with logistics and engagement activities at our booth and beyond, sharing our tech stack and what life is like at The Workshop. Plus, plenty of our Inventors took the opportunity to attend and enjoy some of the activities and 75+ presentations that took place.
Senior Software Engineer David Rando, who was one of our Inventors onsite, had this to say: “I loved how the organisers handled the event. It’s clear they really care about the topic and put a huge effort into it. I was able to attend some really excellent presentations, including the Introduction to Contract Testing with Pact.io by our own awesome architects Francisco Ramirez and Ignacio Martinez. I’m not just saying this because they work with us, but it was one of the best sessions I attended, no doubt about it!”
During Francisco and Ignacio’s workshop, attendees were invited to try out the Pact.io open-source framework, learning how to use it to verify integrations between apps, APIs and microservices.
The Workshop’s own Juanlu Hidalgo also dropped in to present his 45-minute talk, Streaming Data Analysis with ksqlDB. The presentation touched upon the key concepts of the ksqlDB, which is a purpose-built streaming database that helps developers create stream processing applications, allowing them to easily access data in Apache Kafka. Juanlu did a live demo getting into the nitty-gritty of how we can use this tech to build a full data quality reconciliation application.
He told us, “OpenSouthCode was my first time presenting externally. For me, the storytelling element was the most challenging part, but I felt really supported by my manager, my team and others from our organisation who helped build my confidence and make the best presentation possible. Events like OpenSouthCode are a great way to build visibility for our company and introduce ourselves to potential candidates.”
We love seeing our Inventors step out and take advantage of events like OpenSouthCode. It’s a fantastic opportunity for team members to network and share their knowledge and passion with the broader community, all while staying up-to-date on all the latest trends. Whether making a presentation or simply connecting with like-minded tech talent, these events always spark fresh innovation and keep us agile – which is also at the heart of open-source technologies. The event also received plenty of coverage in the local media. Spanish-speakers can check out just a few selections below:
With attendees from as far as Poland, Russia and Germany, it’s clear that the interest in OpenSouthCode continues to grow. We’re already looking forward to returning next year to see how the industry has evolved. See you there?
