Geek Week 2022

Without a doubt, Geek Week is one of the highlights of The Workshop’s annual calendar. The event brings together employees across multiple offices for five days of building and sharing tech knowledge, in pursuit of the future of engineering and innovation.

This year's upgraded event took place from 3 - 7 October and featured the Next-Level Hackathon, a series of seven Learning Lab presentations and plenty of onsite and online activities to keep things energised.

Our Learning Lab series brought top tech minds from both inside and outside The Workshop to share their insights and ignite discussion. With over 550 attendees, this year’s series covered a broad range of topics: AI & Gaming, Practical Software Architecture & Design, Security in SDLC, High-performing Organisations, Cloud 101, Customer-centricity and Monolith Decomposition Patterns.

Each talk was followed by a Q&A session and discussion, which was a fantastic way to get ideas incubating among participants. Following the event, we asked a few of our presenters to share their thoughts and top takeaways in our Geek Shots video snapshot series.

But the most anticipated event was, of course, the Next-Level Hackathon, where over 100 competitors in 15 squads teamed up to showcase their ingenuity and creative tech talent, developing solutions to fuel the future of engineering. This year, our Inventors were judged on criteria including technical quality, user experience, idea disruption and “reality check” as they competed for big Bitcoin prizes and the chance to turn their ideas into tangible projects through The Workshop.

Congratulations to this year’s winners:
• Technical Quality: Undefined Team
• User Experience: The Dependables
• Idea Disruption: Insert Coin
• Reality Check: Mojo Picón
• People's Choice Award: Data Clairvoyants
• Overall Winners: Data Clairvoyants

Finally, the week was rounded out with a huge variety of extra-curricular fun, including e-sports tournaments, escape rooms and plenty of opportunities for networking and idea generation. Plus, Geek Week also found a life online, with over 1500 social media interactions across our platforms.

Building and sharing tech knowledge through invention, inspiration and innovation. That’s the spirit of Geek Week. Take a look at the event summary video now:

See you next year as we level up once more for Geek Week 2023 and the Next-Level Hackathon.
