Internal mobility: 10 powerful tips to elevate your career

October 10, 2024

It’s easy to think of a career as a linear journey, where climbing the ranks guarantees success and happiness. In reality, finding the right fit and reaching your potential often requires navigating a more complex path, one filled with unexpected opportunities and bold choices.

That’s why at The Workshop, we’re passionate about fostering internal mobility, creating a space where every team member is empowered to take charge of their career and confidently pursue new opportunities without fear of stepping outside their comfort zone.

Markel's Story: From Platform Engineer to DevOps Manager

Markel Elorza, employee at The Workshop

Meet Markel who recently made an inspiring career jump from Platform Engineer to DevOps Manager. His journey perfectly embodies our commitment to supporting bold career moves. In this blog, Markel shares his top ten tips for navigating internal transitions, offering valuable insights for anyone ready to embrace their own unique path.

1. Stay open to what's next

Internal mobility can take you by surprise! I wasn’t searching for a new role when I moved from Platform Engineer to DevOps Manager. It was a Talent Space presentation by our Head of Engineering that introduced me to the possibility of managing a DevOps team. My advice? Always stay curious and open-minded about new roles, even if you’re not actively looking. You never know when the next chapter of your career might present itself.

2. Ask yourself: "Why not me?"

To be honest, I hesitated when I first saw the DevOps manager role. While it didn’t require previous managerial experience, I couldn’t help but wonder if I was ready for such a leap. But then I asked myself, “Why not me?” Taking on a new challenge often means stepping into the unknown. If a role excites you but feels a bit out of reach, go for it! The best growth happens when you take on challenges that push your boundaries.

3. Talk to your manager early on

Before applying, I had an honest conversation with my manager about how this role might fit with my career goals. Getting their perspective and support made a huge difference. If you’re considering a move, have an open discussion with your manager. They can provide valuable insights and encouragement that will help you take that first step with confidence.

4. Make the most of internal support

One thing I appreciated about The Workshop was the support I received along the way. From HR partners to leadership training, the resources were there to help me navigate the challenges of moving from a technical to a management role successfully. So, when you make a career move, don’t hesitate to lean on the support systems available – they’re there to help you succeed.

5. Develop more than just technical skills

Transitioning from a technical role to management meant learning how to lead, communicate and solve problems differently. If you’re thinking about moving into a new role, take time to consider the skills you’ll need to succeed in your new position and invest in developing them. At The Workshop, there are plenty of resources available, like mentorship programmes and leadership training, to help you shine in your new role.

6. Trust the process

Applying for an internal role was straightforward and transparent. I interviewed with both the Director and Head of Engineering, and throughout the process, it was clear the company genuinely wanted me to succeed. If you’re thinking about making a move, trust that the process is fair, and your skills and potential will be recognised and valued.

7. Expect some growing pains

Every new role comes with its challenges, and moving into management was no different. For me, balancing leadership responsibilities with technical work was an adjustment. It’s normal to feel out of your depth at first. However, with the right support and mindset, these challenges can transform into valuable growth opportunities. Embrace the bumps along the way; they’re all part of the learning curve.

8. Remember: You're not alone

My transition really highlighted The Workshop’s commitment to employee growth. It’s something I didn’t fully appreciate until I experienced it firsthand. From mentoring and training to simply having someone to bounce ideas off of, the support is genuine. The company truly invests in your success as you step into your new role.

9. Get involved and stay visible

One of the best parts of my new role is supporting my team and watching them grow. Being visible and involved helps build trust and strong relationships, which is key for success in any leadership role. So, when you step into a new role, stay engaged and make sure your team knows you’ve got their back.

10. Don't let self-doubt win

If there’s one key takeaway from my journey, it’s this: don’t let self-doubt hold you back. More often than not, your biggest obstacle is your own hesitation. Trust in your ability to learn and adapt, and take that leap—apply for that job! You might surprise yourself. Remember, if you never try, you’ll never know what you could achieve.

Final thoughts: Take charge of your career

Transitioning into a new role isn’t just about finding the next step; it’s about discovering what truly excites you and pursuing it with confidence. If a role catches your eye, don’t hesitate—make your move! We will be here to support you every step of the way.
